Two relatives of Aam Aadmi Party leader and activist Soni Sori were detained by the Bastar Range police in Chhattisgarh. While Sori's sister, Dhaneshwari Markam, was picked up by the police on Friday and taken to an undisclosed location, before being released later, her brother-in-law Ajay Markam has been in police custody since Thursday, according to Advocate Isha Khandelwal of the Jagdalpur Legal Aid Group.
On February 20, Sori was attacked by three unidentified men with a corrosive chemical in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh. A Special Investigation Team was set up to investigate the attack. However, Khandelwal said that the police have "turned this investigation into an excuse for harassment" of Sori’s relatives. She said that Ajay Markam was "repeatedly told by the interrogating team that the police would arrest him for orchestrating the attack" on Sori.
Scroll.in tried to contact two Bastar Range police officials involved in the investigation, but received no response.
