The Rest of India team created history on Thursday by completing the highest successful run-chase in the history of the Irani Cup and the third-highest in Indian first-class cricket. The Rest chased down their target of 482 with four wickets to spare to beat Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai at the Brabourne Stadium, thereby lifting the Irani Cup. The mammoth chase in the second innings was grounded by 127 from opener Faiz Fazal, but there were other crucial contributions too. Karun Nair scored a steady 92, while Sudip Chatterjee and Stuart Binny hit 54 runs each. Sheldon Jackson remained not out on 59.

ROI's win was even more impressive, considering Mumbai had notched up 603 in the first innings. For the home team, Suryakumar Yadav and Jay Bista scored centuries. In response, ROI fell short by 297 runs in the first innings, scoring only 306. In a stirring comeback though, Mumbai were shot out for 182 in their second innings with only four of their players getting into double figures. The bulk of the damage was done by ROI's Jayant Yadav who took 4/93, supported by Jaydev Unadkat (3-16) and Stuart Binny (2-41).
