Record producer George Martin, who was knighted in 1996, has died at the age of 90. Former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr made the announcement on Twitter on Wednesday. Martin was the producer behind most of The Beatles’ most popular records, including songs like 'Love Me Do', 'Yesterday', and 'Please Please Me'. He was often referred to as the Fifth Beatle. In an interview in 1971, John Lennon had said, “George Martin made us what we were in the studio. He helped us develop a language to talk to other musicians.”
His death has been mourned by musicians across the world, including Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher and British pop legend Boy George, as well as by British Prime Minister David Cameron. Martin also produced music for other musicians and composers such as Matt Monro, Jeff Beck, Elton John, Cheap Trick, Kenny Rogers and Celine Dion. He produced the well-known tribute to former Princess of Wales Diana Spencer, "Candle In The Wind", which was performed by Elton John.
