The Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi has reportedly ordered legal action against three television news channels that aired doctored videos of a protest at Jawaharlal Nehru University from the night of February 9. The government had earlier called for criminal charges to be filed against the channels. The protest was held against the "judicial killing" of Parliament attacks convict Afzal Guru, following which the university’s Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested. Later, two more JNU students, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, also surrendered to the police. Reports had said that one of the three channels had modified videos from the night and aired them on their network. The three channels that aired footage from that night are Zee News, NewsX and Times Now.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led government in the national capital had earlier said it had found no evidence of Kumar shouting anti-national slogans at the event. It had instituted a magisterial inquiry that gave Kumar a clean chit. A Hyderabad laboratory had earlier said two of seven clippings of the February 9 protest had been tampered with. The Delhi Police had also used some of the footage as evidence for its case against the JNUSU president and his peers.
