Jawaharlal Nehru University students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, who were charged with sedition for allegedly raising anti-national slogans on campus, have been remind in police custody for three days. Khalid and Bhattacharya appeared before the police on Tuesday after the Delhi High Court said that they can't dictate the terms of their surrender. The students had earlier refused to step out of their campus, and the JNU authorities had disallowed the police from entering.
The India Today reported that the duo, along with three others, had gone missing form the campus after JNU Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on sedition charges on February 12. Police sources said that both the students cooperated during the five-hour-long interrogation that followed their arrest. According to Rajya Sabha TV the police want to question Kumar, Khalid, and Bhattacharya together. The controversy erupted after an event was organised at JNU on the death anniversary of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on February 9.
