The Jaypee Punjab Warriors clinched their first-ever Hockey India League title, defeating the Kalinga Lancers 6-1 in the final of the 2016 season of the Hockey India League on Sunday in Ranchi. After finishing as runners-up in the last two seasons, the Punjab Warriors were third time lucky.
Punjab's Armaan Qureshi gave his team the perfect start with a field goal in the fourth minute which counted for two points. The Lancers' captain Moritz Fuerste got one back in the 24th minute through a penalty corner but Punjab continued their clinical form, scoring two more field goals through Matt Gohdes in the 39th minute and Satbir Singh in the 42nd minute, ultimately winning quite easily.
Earlier in the day, defending champions Ranchi Rays finished fourth after losing the third-place playoff to the Delhi Waveriders.
