The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has proposed three measures that the government should consider to combat rising pollution in Mumbai, reported the Economic Times. In the Rs 1.55 lakh crore Comprehensive Mobility Plan submitted last month, the civic body has suggested a complete ban on new car and bike registrations in the city after a cutoff date, a ceiling on new registrations each year and approving registrations only after proof of parking space in a housing society or complex is submitted by a buyer. It has also suggested a "congestion tax" in some zones where cars and bikes will be banned during certain hours of the day. In addition, the report proposed a huge fine to be imposed for violating the rules.

The plan includes an upheaval of the public transport infrastructure to facilitate easy movement of people and vehicles. It proposes to build 34 exclusive lanes for public transport buses, along with intra-city bus terminals. The plan also envisages widening 707 km of roads and linking roads by removing encroachments. A dedicated metro network, 29 rail overbridges, 19 flyovers, six elevated roads, and over 100 cycling tracks are also part of the plan.
