The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Wednesday reportedly organised a counter-protest at Jadavpur University, against the rally organised by a group of students on Tuesday in support of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union leader Kanhaiya Kumar and Parliament attacks convict Afzal Guru. The protestors tore down posters that supported Guru and independence for Kashmir. There were also reports of clashes between student groups.
In an effort to drive home the point that sloganeering against government actions in socio-political issues should not be used as a proof of anti-national activities, the students had on Tuesday raised slogans like 'Jo Kashmir mange azadi, jo Manipur mange Azadi, jo tum na doge azadi, toh cheen ke lenge azadi'. They also raised slogans demanding justice in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case. The Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a report from the West Bengal government on the incident, reported ANI.
Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Suranjan Das also released a statement on Wednesday distancing the varsity from "fringe elements". Das said, "Jadavpur University will not support any anti-national activity. I spoke to the student representatives and they have categorically stated that they had no role in the protest. Students have said that they do not endorse anti-national slogans. That rally was not officially convened by the students' union." Das added that the university would take necessary action if it received any information of anti-national activity by its students.
