The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought suggestions from the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Managing Committee and other PIL petitioners as to how the judiciary could stop sardar jokes. The DSGMC told the court that Sardar jokes are an attack on the dignity of their community and such humour should be banned on the Internet.

The petitioners said Sikh jokes show them in bad light despite having several eminent personalities from the community. To this, the apex court bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur observed that Sikhs are the pride of the nation and that the community is second to none. The bench also informed the petitioners that the next Chief Justice of India, Justice J S Khehar, is also a Sikh. The bench gave the petitioners six weeks to suggest measures that the judiciary can take to ensure that such a ban can be enforced. .
