A massive fire broke out on Sunday at the Maharashtra Night event which is a part of the Make in India week that's being held in Mumbai, reported NDTV. No casualties or injuries have been reported and authorities have indicated that everybody was safely evacuated from the site of the event, at Girgaum in Mumbai.
The fire started on the stage soon after a performance by Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Governor C Vidyasagar Rao, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, actor-turned-politician Hema Malini, who were attending the event, were evacuated from the area.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the Make in India Week, aimed at promoting India as a manufacturing destination, on Saturday. The fire department sent 14 fire engines and 10 water tankers to bring the fire under control.
The CM said that it was "unfortunate" that such an accident occurred even after the organisers conducted a fire safety audit before the event and followed the standard operating procedure. The Supreme Court had, last week, permitted the Maharashtra government to hold the event at the Girgaum Chowpatty beach, overturning the Bombay High Court's decision denying permission to the organisers.
