A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand on Sunday causing a cliff near Taylor's Mistake Bay to collapse into the sea, reported The Guardian. No serious damages or fatalities were reported after the quake, which was centred about 15 kilometers east of Christchurch. GeoNet, which monitors seismic activity, rated it as severe and said that more than 40 aftershocks were felt in the area.
This comes only days before the anniversary of a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that killed as many as 185 people in South Island in 2011. New Zealand sits on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes are common. No tsunami warning was issued as the quake was a shallow one at just five miles deep. People tweeted images of the cliff collapse from across the city.
