The West Indies Under-19 cricket team won their first ever World Cup as they defeated India by five wickets in a tense finish in the final on Sunday in Mirpur. On a pitch that had a tinge of green, India were put in to bat and immediately struggled. West Indies' four-pronged pace-attack was right on target. Apart from Sarfaraz Khan, who played a lone hand with an 89-ball 51, no Indian batsman got going. Favourites India failed to play out their 50 overs, and were bowled out for 146 in 45.1 overs. For the West Indies, pacers Alzarri Joseph (3-39) and Ryan John (3-38) impressed.
The Windies did not find the chase easy. They got off to a slow start, losing two key wickets in the first ten overs. Captain Shimron Hetmyer (23) and Keacy Carty (52 not out) consolidated for a while, but India were back in the game with three quick wickets, leaving West Indies reeling at 77-5. However, Carty remained patient to guide West Indies to a thrilling and famous win with three balls to spare.
