Kirthiga Reddy, Facebook Inc’s managing director in India, has resigned from her post on the back of the company shutting down its flagship Free Basics scheme in the country. Reddy said she will relocate to the United States and pursue other opportunities with at the company headquarters.
Reddy, who made the announcement in a Facebook post, is working with William Easton, MD of emerging markets (Asia Pacific) to find her successor. She was the company’s first employee in India.
On Monday, India’s telecom regulator ruled against differential tariffs and discriminatory pricing of data services, dealing a blow to Facebook’s Free Basics scheme. Formerly called internet.org, Free Basics sought to provide a select number of website to users of Reliance Communications for free.
