Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Thursday sent a legal notice to Hindi daily Sun Star for accusing him of fixing one of India's Test matches against England in 2014, reported dna. Dhoni has threatened to press for damages to the tune of Rs 100 crore for the "defamation, mental agony and trauma" he faced due to reports published by the daily.
In a sting operation conducted by Sun Star, the secretary of the Delhi and District Cricket Association and former manager of the Indian cricket team, Sunil Dev, was caught on camera saying that the Test match played in Manchester was fixed. He claimed that the entire team was surprised when Dhoni, India's then Test captain, decided to bat first. India went on to lose the game by an innings and 54 runs. However, The Times of India later reported that Dev had denied his earlier claims and was also preparing to take action against the daily.
Dhoni's lawyer said, "The said video contains footage of an absolute dubious sting operation of the aforementioned Mr [Sunil] Dev, which in the present circumstances is nothing but a false propaganda initiated by you to defame my client."
