Chairman of Tata Trusts, Ratan Tata, said on Wednesday that India has an “inherently unequal” environment. He added that citizens of the country have been divided on the basis of caste, religion and communal groups for political reasons, reported PTI.
"We are now Maharashtrians, Punjabis and Tamilians, rather than Indians…This may help some people at election time, but they do not help in creating a unified country," Tata said. "The day we all become Indians again, that's when the country will be strong," he added.
The 78-year-old said his greatest desire as an Indian was "to be proud of my country because it is an equal-opportunity nation". He was being interviewed by the company's internal publication, Tata Review.
