Ten Indian Army personnel have been missing since early Wednesday after an avalanche in the Ladakh's Siachen region. The army post at Siachen is 19,600 feet above sea level – the highest in the world. Army officials said search and rescue operations were launched after the avalanche. Four soldiers were killed in another avalanche in the region on January 4.
The 70 sq km glacier forms a junction between India, Pakistan and China. Temperatures in the high-altitude region can go as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius. There have been more deaths in Siachen due to extreme weather than in battle. Around 3,000 Indian troops are still stationed at the post.
