The New Delhi railway station will soon generate electricity from garbage. Divisional Railway Manager of Delhi, Arun Arora, said it was a first-of-its-kind project to dispose solid waste in an eco-friendly manner and generate energy from garbage, PTI reported. Garbage at New Delhi railway station will be separated into biodegradable and recyclable waste, after which the biodegradable waste will be converted into electricity and manure.
A “waste to energy” bio methanation plant, which is being constructed on a 15,000-square-metre plot of land, will be commissioned by June for the purpose. The plant will have a capacity to convert 15 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day into electricity. The Railways will foot the capital cost of the plant, and a commissioned contractor will operate and maintain it for five years. Tenders have been floated inviting bidders for the project, which is estimated to cost around Rs 15 lakh.
