Members of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and the Congress clashed in Hyderabad’s Old City on Tuesday, on the day of the municipal corporation elections. Congress leaders, including Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief Uttam Kumar Reddy, sustained minor injuries in the brawl. AIMIM workers were led by party chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, The New Indian Express reported. Reddy, whose vehicle was also damaged in the incident, has demanded Owaisi’s arrest.
The incident occurred when Congress leaders were leaving Mir Chowk police station after their MLA and former AIMIM member Mohammed Ghouse was granted bail. They were approached by around 200 AIMIM workers, following which a heated argument ensued. The police directed Reddy and other Congress leaders back into the police station and lathi-charged the crowd.
Ghouse was arrested earlier in the day over a clash with AIMIM workers in the suburban Shalibanda neighbourhood. AIMIM's Charminar MLA Pasha Qadri was arrested in the case as well.
