Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday met with Muslim clerics to seek their cooperation in curbing the growing reach of the Islamic State militant group in India, PTI reported. During the hour-long meeting, they discussed legal steps to fight IS, its social media propaganda, how the group attracts people – especially youth – to join it, and its influence in the country. The clerics assured the government their full cooperation, while the minister said preventive measures were required even though IS’ traction in India was insignificant.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and senior home ministry officials attended the meeting, besides clerics including Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind’s Maulana Arshad Madani, Maulana Abdul Wahid Hussain Chisti of Ajmer Sharif, Shia leader Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad Qalbe Jawaid and All India Muslim Personal Law Board member Kamal Faruqui.

So far, 23 Indians have joined IS, according to Indian intelligence agencies. While six of them were reportedly killed in different incidents in Iraq and Syria, two are absconding members of the banned Indian Mujahideen. At least 150 Indians are being investigated for their alleged online IS links.
