Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti said on Tuesday that she wants the Centre to take some confidence-building measures before her party could consider forming a new government in Jammu and Kashmir. Mufti met the state Governor NN Vohra on Tuesday, who she said wanted to know the status of the government formation. Vohra had invited Mufti and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders for separate meetings to discuss the government formation in the state, which has been under Governor's Rule since January 8, a day after Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died.
The PDP was part of a coalition government with the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir until Sayeed's death. Mufti, who is Sayeed's daughter, said, "I did not join hands with [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi. I joined hands with the people who joined hands with Modi. I don't have that vision which Mufti saheb had, [and] neither do I have the experience." Just before the meeting, BJP leader Nirmal Singh also met Mufti and expressed confidence that the coalition will continue and an elected government will be in place "very soon".
The National Conference hit out at both PDP and BJP over the political uncertainty in the state, and said fresh elections should be held if the two coalition partners are unable to form the government.
