After a fortnight-long agitation over the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula, the Hyderabad University students returned to classes on Monday, reported India Today. The decision was made after the interim Vice Chancellor M Periyasami held a meeting with the Joint Action Committee delegation. The registrar of the university confirmed that the university has reopened by issuing a circular.
“Students agreed to resume academic work, but the relay hunger strike will continue,” Prof. M. Periasamy, the incharge Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad said. The Hindu had reported that the protesting students on Sunday agreed to end the strike and return to classes from February 1 provided the vice chancellor Appa Rao, who had gone on leave, does not resume his duties.
