Kerala is set to launch a taxi service that will be owned and operated by transgenders. After unveiling the first Transgender Policy in the country with an aim to end societal stigma towards the community, the state government is now launching "Gender Taxi", or G-Taxi, owned and operated by transgenders, reported PTI.
The state-run Gender Park, which is under the Department of Social Justice, drew up the G-Taxi programme on the model of its successful all-women cab network, called She-Taxi. G-Taxi is envisaged as an "equality taxi", in which all commuters, irrespective of their gender, can avail the service.
Gender Park CEO Dr PTM Sunish said the project is expected to promote entrepreneurship among transgenders and provide them a better means of livelihood. The first batch of G-Taxis will be rolled out in March if everything goes ahead as planned.
