Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Sunday that he supported the strike by employees of the city's municipal corporation. Thousands of Delhi municipal sanitation workers staged protests on Thursday and dumped garbage outside Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia's house in the capital, demanding that their pending salaries be released. The protest gathered momentum on Saturday, with doctors, nurses and engineers from the civic bodies joining the strike.

Kejriwal tweeted, “I support [the] demand of protesting MCD employees that they should get their full salaries. I hope some solution will emerge after Tuesday's High Court hearing [on the matter].” He also urged Aam Aadmi Party volunteers to assist the Public Works Department of Delhi to clear the city of garbage.

AAP leader Kapil Mishra and other volunteers helped clean the streets of Delhi on Sunday, as the strike by municipal corporation employees entered its fifth day. Mishra had earlier alleged a salary scam in the corporations and said the Bharatiya Janata Party-led civic bodies are “not capable of clearing garbage”.

Furthermore, Delhi PWD Minister Satyendar Jain alleged on Sunday that municipal councillors were forcing their workers to go on strike as well, and called the protest a “political game”. Jain met with municipal commissioners of the north and east civic bodies, who assured him that the employees on strike will return to work soon, ANI reported. On Saturday, the government had deployed hundreds of PWD workers to lift garbage from across the city, while some 60,000 sanitation workers continued their indefinite strike.
