The ministry of external affairs on Thursday announced two changes that will help first-time applicants get a passport under the normal category within a week, instead of a month, reported the Times of India. The applicant will need to submit the regular form, accompanied by copies of their Aadhaar card, an electoral photo identity card and PAN card. They will also have to submit an affidavit in the format of Annexure-I (declaration of citizenship, family details and no criminal record).
According to the new guideline, the police verification, which used to delay the process, will be conducted after the passport is issued. A ministry statement added that there will be no extra charge for the service.
