Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis swept past the German-Czech pair of Julia Goerges and Karolina Pliskova 6-1 6-0 in just 54 minutes on Wednesday to book a place in the Australian Open final. The Indo-Swiss pair will meet Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka from the Czech Republic in the summit clash, and are in with a very good chance of winning the first Grand Slam of 2016. Their winning streak extended to 37 matches following the victory.
Unfortunately for India, Rohan Bopanna did not have much to celebrate. The 35-year-old and his partner Yung-Jan Chan crashed to a 2-6 5-7 defeat in the mixed doubles quarter-finals against Andreja Klepac and Treat Huey.
In the men's singles draw, Milos Raonic, who had previous defeated Stan Wawrinka, held on to beat the big-serving Gael Monfils to enter the semi-finals. Monfils lost the first set, got back level in the second, but then lost steam and ultimately conceded the game 3-6 6-3 3-6 4-6 to Raonic. The Canadian will face World No 2 Andy Murray in the last-four, who fought off a stiff challenge from Spaniard David Ferrer. The Scotsman took four sets to win the game 6-3 6-7 6-2 6-3.
Murray's victory provided gloss to an amazing day for Great Britain at the Australian Open. For the first time in over 30 years, a British woman will play in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam, after the unseeded Johanna Konta brushed past Shuai Zhang 6-4 6-1 in the quarter-finals. Konta will face seventh seed Angelique Kerber of Germany in the last-four.
