Extreme cold has hit parts of Asia in the last few days, killing at least 65 people, AP reported. Heavy snow, sleet and cold winds disrupted travel, and caused deaths and injuries, affecting life across Taiwan, Japan, China, Hong Kong, South Korea. Even Bangkok experienced much lower temperatures than normal, recording a low of 16° Celsius on Sunday. The extreme weather is reportedly being caused by a cold snap from the Arctic, bringing snow to some parts of Asia for the first time ever.
South Chinese city Guangzhou, which lies near the Tropic of Cancer, saw sleet for the first time in 60 years. Temperatures fell to as low as 3° Celsius in Hong Kong, leading to schools being shut. Hundreds of flights were cancelled in South Korea, leaving thousands stranded after temperatures fell to -6° Celsius in South Korean resort town Jeju. Eergu’Na in Inner Mongolia (pictured above) recorded a low of -46.8° Celsius on Saturday. In China, 24 weather stations recorded all-time lows between Friday and Sunday. Vietnam and Taiwan were also hit by the cold snap, among other places.
Reports said around 57 elderly people died in Taiwan alone from the cold weather. A city official told AP the cold wave caused breathing problems and heart trouble for many victims.
