A day after the death of renowned danseuse Mrinalini Sarabhai, her daughter, activist and danseuse Mallika Sarabhai hit out at the Prime Minister for his silence on her mother’s demise. Sarabhai, who stood as an independent candidate in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, wrote on social media that Narendra Modi should have recognised the contributions of her mother, a Padma Bhushan awardee.
In a Facebook post, Sarabhai said that Modi’s hatred of her politics has no connection with her mother’s work and promotion of Indian culture. “However much you hate me, as our prime minister, it behove you to recognise her contribution. You have not. Shame on you”, the post said.
Sarabhai has been vocal in her criticism of Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party before, also when she contested against BJP veteran LK Advani in Gandhinagar in 2009. She also filed a plea against Modi’s administration after the Gujarat riots in 2002, and organised protests against the BJP.
