Five gunmen from Somalia's Islamist Shebab militant group detonated a bomb and stormed a popular seaside restaurant in the capital Mogadishu on Friday, reported AFP. The incident left at least 19 people, including women and children, dead and several injured. Four gunmen from the al-Qaeda-linked terror outfit were killed and one captured.

The Lido beach area, where the terror attack took place, is busy with restaurants, including upmarket establishments popular with local businessmen and diaspora Somalis who have returned home to the city.

"The mujahideen fighters targeted the Lido Beach," the militants said on the group's Radio Andalus, calling it a "major operation against the enemy of Allah". The Shebab are fighting to overthrow the internationally-backed government in Mogadishu, and have carried out attacks in the capital before.
