Sambia Sohrab, son of Trinamool Congress leader Mohammed Sohrab, was charged with the murder of Indian Air Force Corporal Abhimanyu Gaud on Sunday. He has been remanded in police custody for 14 days. The Kolkata Police confirmed that the 24-year-old was behind the wheel of the Audi car that mowed down the IAF officer during a Republic Day parade rehearsal on Wednesday. Sohrab was arrested by the Kolkata Police on Saturday and produced at a local court on Sunday.
The TMC distanced itself from Mohammed Sohrab following the incident, reported The Times of India. Calling the accident "horrific" and the driver a "reckless demon", a press statement issued by the party said Sohrab is "a minor political activist elected to the state assembly with the support of the Left Front in 2006".
