The Delhi government called the odd-even number plate scheme a success, hours before its 15-day trial period in the city ends. State Transport Minister Gopal Rai said the scheme succeeded because of people’s determination to follow the formula. He added that the cooperation of all agencies, including the Delhi traffic police, transport department and civil defence volunteers, has also been "a major factor in its success".
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal requested the people of the city to continue with the scheme voluntarily "as it is in interest of our children". He said that the pollution levels in Delhi had come down, but lesser congestion on the roads was another benefit. The state government had said on Wednesday that the scheme will be implemented again after being discussed in a review meeting scheduled to be convened by Kejriwal on January 18.
The rule was enforced to bring down pollution levels in the national capital and improve air quality. The government had urged people to adhere to the restrictions placed and travel by car-pooling and means of public transport.
