The Islamic State militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack near the Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, in which seven people have been reported killed. Officials said that the Afghan troops had ended the siege, hours after an explosion and firing was heard near the consulate. Many other foreign consulates are in the vicinity, including India's. According to NDTV, the explosion took place 200 metres from the Indian consulate. Afghanistan's TOLO news reported that the Pakistan consulate was the target of the attack.

The incident comes ten days after an attack at the Indian consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, which resulted in a 25-hour siege that left a commando and the attackers dead. The attack was seen as an effort to derail relations between India and Pakistan in Afghanistan, which is seen by many as a possible “proxy war” site. Afghanistan holds an important place in bilateral relations between the two countries, given Pakistan’s support for the Taliban and India’s stand against it.
