The Bharatiya Janata Party has asked the Peoples Democratic Party, its ally in Jammu and Kashmir, to take a decision soon on government formation following the death of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Mehbooba Mufti, Sayeed's daughter, is tipped to take over, but the PDP has not made any announcement on the succession yet. Four days after the Sayeed's death, the BJP's general secretary Ram Madhav said on Monday that the party wants the uncertainty to end and the arrangement reached between the two parties earlier to continue, reported PTI.
The BJP has not formally offered support to Mehbooba Mufti's chief ministership yet. On Sunday, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi met Mufti to condole her father's death. The Congress has said the meeting was not political and that the party has a "long association" with Mufti's family. BJP leader Nitin Gadkari met Mufti as well, and said both parties would work together in the state. The state is currently under President's rule.
