Union minister for Power Piyush Goyal on Saturday said that Maharashtra is likely to become the first state which will waive road tax, registration fees and value added tax on electric vehicles. While inaugurating a bio-CNG plant near Chennai, Goyal said the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Maharashtra had agreed to his proposal, and would promote green energy in the state. He added that other BJP-led state governments are likely to follow.
Goyal said the Centre also plans to set up 5 lakh battery charging stations to promote electric vehicles in the country, and will be working with experts on how to reduce building costs.
