Congress won the Bangalore city seat in the Karnataka Legislative Council elections on Wednesday, with counting still underway. The Bharatiya Janata Party led in two seats –Chikmagalur and Kodagu, while the Janata Dal (Secular) was ahead in Shimoga. A total of 25 seats went to polls on Sunday, with their current candidates set to finish their terms on January 5.
The Congress, which is the ruling party in the state’s Legislative Assembly, is facing a tough battle, with the BJP and JDS joining hands on various issues. Out of the 125 candidates, the BJP has fielded 20, the JDS has sent up 18, while the Congress has 21. The remaining candidates belong to other parties and also include 60 Independents.
The elections will be a test for chief minister Siddaramaiah, who is hoping that a strong showing will make the party’s position in the state's Upper House stronger. The 75-member council has been short of Congress leaders, making things difficult for the incumbent government.
