Governors of Missouri and New Mexico declared an emergency after parts of the south, south west and mid-west in the United States were hit by rare storms. At least 43 have been killed so far, Reuters reported, with the storms triggering flash floods and tornadoes as well. AFP reported that the Governors of Alabama and Mississippi declared an emergency as well. Emergency workers evacuated residents from Missouri after many roads and highways were closed down.

People have been killed in Illinois and in the cities of Dallas and Garland in Texas. Arkansas was also hit by tornadoes on Sunday. Tornadoes have normally hit areas of the US during spring and summer, but very rarely in winter. Warnings were issued for tornadoes in parts of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and Mississippi.
