Angry villagers in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh district on Thursday assaulted two police inspectors and constables after a 17-year-old girl was gangraped and murdered in the Guru Sikran village. The police failed to arrest anyone more than 24 hours after the incident, reported Hindustan Times. The police had to deploy several teams in the area following the protests. The villagers also did not let the police take custody of the body.
According to officials, four motorcycle-borne men forced the girl, who was a student, off the road and gangraped her in a nearby sugarcane field, before strangling her with her own clothes. The incident came to light because another student saw the rape and informed the villagers, who rushed to the site but could not save the girl, the report said. The police have lodged a complaint against the four men.
