A proposal by the Centre to the finance ministry has suggested increasing the salaries of members of Parliament from Rs 1.4 lakh a month to Rs 2.8 lakh a month, plus additional allowance and higher pensions. The Indian Express reported on Thursday that the government wants to increase the basic salary from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh, the constituency allowance from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000, and the secretarial assistance and office allowance from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000.
There are also plans to increase the pension for MPs from Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000, and those who have served five years are to get an additional Rs 2,000 per year. At present, this additional amount is Rs 1,500 per year.
The Finance Ministry needs to approve the proposal before the government can introduce it as the Salary, Allowance and Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendment) Bill. The ministry is is likely to agree to the demands, the reported added.
In October, the Delhi government had increased the salaries of MLAs from Rs 88,000 to Rs 2.10 lakh a month.
