The Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday that as many as 442 people have been convicted so far by various courts of Delhi in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, The Indian Express reported. Minister of state for home affairs Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said the ministry has established a Special Investigation Team to re-investigate the serious criminal cases that were filed in the national capital in connection with the riots, which were later closed.

Chaudhary said that the Centre has reimbursed Rs 154.54 crore to the Delhi government under a rehabilitation package. The payment was made ex-gratia to the victims of the 1984 riots in case of death, injury, damaged residential properties, and damaged uninsured commercial and industrial properties. The central government has also sanctioned an additional compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of those killed in the riots, he added.
