Amid reports of Delhi becoming the most polluted city in the world, Union minister Anant Geete took an electric car to Parliament on Tuesday. The minister for heavy industries said the battery-powered car, a Mahindra Verito, is more expensive than others because it is imported, but that Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari is trying to have it made locally as well.
NDTV reported that the National Electric Mobility Mission aims to have between six to seven million such battery-powered electric cars out in the country by 2020. On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted an electric bus to Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan. The bus will be used to help parliamentarians commute.
The state government is trying to enforce several new measures to decrease air pollution in Delhi, among them setting up a policy to allow cars with odd and even number plates to ply on alternate days.
