Six Nato troops, all of whom were Americans, were killed in a suicide bomb attack carried out by the Taliban near Kabul on Monday. The bombing, in which three others were wounded, was part of the terror group’s attempts to capture the southern Afghan district of Sangin, which is the centre of the lucrative opium trade, AFP reported.
The attack on the American soldiers took place during a joint patrol with Afghan forces near Bagram, which is the largest military base of the United States in the country. It occurred a year after Nato formally ended its operations in the country.
Deputy Governor of Helmand province, Mohammad Jan Rasoolyar, told AFP that the Taliban had captured the police headquarters, governor’s office and the intelligence agency building in Sangin. The government denied claims of a large number of casualties and that the district was at risk of being captured by the Taliban.
