In a thriller of a final, Chennaiyin FC fought back from the jaws of defeat against FC Goa to win this year's edition of the Indian Super League at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa on Sunday.
After a goalless first half, the game opened up brilliantly in the second. Chennaiyin FC managed to get on to the goalsheet first, as their star this season Pelissari managed to put it in off the rebound from a penalty in the 54th minute. They hardly got time to enjoy their lead though, as Goa roared back four minutes later, courtesy a Haokip tap-in.
With the game stuck 1-1 and entering the 80th minute, Goa's Joffre beat the wall with a fantastic free kick to put his team in front and get the crowd surging. But things came crashing down for them as Goa keeper Kattimani made the worst of errors at the most unfortunate time – while rising high to collect a long ball in the 90th minute, he collided with his own player, the ball brushing his hands on its way into the goal.
Worse was to come for Goa – a few seconds later, the league's highest scorer, Chennai's Mendoza got the most important goal of his season with a left-foot piledriver, putting Chennai 3-2 up. From 2-1 down, Chennai had roared back to their well-deserved maiden ISL triumph.
