Merriam-Webster dictionaries on Tuesday declared the suffix “ism” its the word of the year. Its choice was based on the rising number of people looking up “ism” words on its website, including socialism, fascism, racism, feminism, communism, capitalism and terrorism, the company told the Associated Press.
In 2012, another “ism” – capitalism – had been given the word-of-the-year honour. In November this year, Oxford Dictionaries had declared the “face with tears of joy” emoji its word of the year.
