A cold wave swept parts of north India on Sunday night and early Monday, with temperatures plummeting to -12°C in Leh, Ladakh – seven degrees lower than the previous night. The remote area received snowfall, as did the higher hills of Himachal Pradesh, reported PTI. In Delhi, temperatures fell by more than five degrees to 6.8°C on Monday morning. Officials from the Indian Meteorological department claimed Monday’s temperatures were more than two degrees below average.
Srinagar experienced near-zero temperatures, while Manali fell to -3°C. High altitude areas in the Himalayas, mostly inhabited by tribal populations, shivered at between -8°C and -14°C. The cold wave also hit parts of Haryana and Punjab, with Narnaul reeling at 2.5°C, and Amritsar and Ludhian staying below the seven-degree mark.
