A six-month-old baby died allegedly during a slum demolition drive organised by Railway Police in west Delhi's Shakur Basti area on Saturday. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday suspended three officials and criticised the Railways for "failing to arrange" for food and shelter for those evicted from their homes despite the cold weather, PTI reported. Over 500 shanties were demolished during an anti-encroachment drive, reported NDTV.

According to a statement from the railways, the slum-dwellers were given adequate notice for the encroachment removal process. It added that the baby's death had nothing to do with the demolition drive. A railway official also told Times Now that police records suggest the baby had died much earlier.

Joint commissioner of police (southwest) Dependra Pathak said that prima facie it appears the baby was smothered under a pile of clothes. “When family members were arranging clothes, a heap of garments fell over the child, which they did not notice,” he said, adding that no case has been registered so far.
