Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in Delhi on Friday for a three-day trip to India. While Abe was received at the airport by minister of state for finance Jayant Sinha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed him to the country via a tweet, saying that his visit "will provide new strength and vigour to India-Japan ties".

Abe will take part in the annual India-Japan summit meeting with Modi on Saturday, following which the two leaders will issue press statements. The two will also visit the Indian prime minister's constituency of Varanasi. Abe will also call on President Pranab Mukherjee, address the Japan-India Innovation Seminar, and meet business leaders, reported The Times of India.

Japan and India are in the final stages of a bilateral nuclear cooperation treaty that will be discussed further, along with plans for a high-speed railway network between a few Indian cities. The Japan Times reported that "broad agreements" are likely to be reached, which will improve defence cooperation between the two countries. The two countries are also expected to deepen bilateral relations and forge better synergies between the two economies, specifically in the trade and investment sector.
