A sessions court in Kolkata on Friday sentenced all three convicts in the Park Street gangrape case to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. It also issued them fines of Rs one lakh each, saying that the convicts would have to undergo a further imprisonment of six months if they were not paid.
The court made the ruling a day after the three men – Sumit Bajaj, Ruman Khan and Naseer Khan – had been found guilty. Two others rapists, including the main accused, are still missing.
The woman, Suzette Jordan, was raped by five men at gunpoint on February 6, 2012. She later became an activist for women’s rights after she did not receive adequate support when she decided to go public about her ordeal.
Jordan died in March this year after a brief illness. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had been criticised for accusing Jordan of faking the incident and also when the joint commissioner of police who had been investigating the case was transferred.
