An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale has struck just off the coast of the eastern Indonesian island of Ambon on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey. Indonesia's tsunami warning centre said there was no potential for the quake to trigger a tsunami, reported AFP.
So far, there have been no reports of casualties or damage caused by the quake, which occurred at a depth of 75 kilometers (47 miles) with its epicenter 174 kilometers (108 miles) southeast of the island, reported Reuters.
Indonesia is located along the Pacific "Ring of Fire", due to which it frequently experiences earthquakes. Last month, an undersea earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck eastern Indonesia, resulting in minor damage to property, but no tsunami.
