United States Secretary of State John Kerry said on Tuesday that an international meeting on the Syrian crisis may be held in New York on December 18, Reuters reported. Kerry said that he met with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the Paris climate talks. He said that the two "talked about Syria and the need for the UN negotiations to be able to begin and hopefully, for a ceasefire to be able to take effect, when and if we can achieve that".
Kerry added that the likelihood of the meeting being held next week partly depended on the result of a conference of Syrian opposition representatives, to be led by Saudi Arabia, in the coming days.
