Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers tried their utmost to block their way to a draw, but India ultimately broke through to dismiss South Africa for 143 and script a 337-run victory on Day 5 of the fourth and final Test in Delhi. Virat Kohli and his men thereby won the series 3-0, which put them on the second spot in the world Test rankings.
Amla and de Villiers continued from where they left off on Day 4, scoring at a snail's pace before Ravindra Jadeja dismissed the South African captain for 25 off 288 balls. The wicket brought Faf du Plessis to the crease, who seemed like he would follow Amla's example, blocking out ball-after-ball to get his first run after 50 balls.
However, Jadeja struck again in the post-lunch session to bring an end to du Plessis's innings. De Villiers still remained grimly fighting at the other end, but the collapse started after tea. Umesh Yadav accounted for Dane Vilas, before Ashwin drove the final nail in the coffin, ending de Villiers's long vigil of 297 balls for his 43 runs. India mopped through the tail in the next three overs with Ashwin recording yet another five-wicket haul.
