Only 149 runs were scored on another slow day at Delhi as South Africa made a valiant attempt to secure a draw. The highlight of the day was Ajinkya Rahane, who scored his second century in the match, joining a rare list of batsmen who have scored a century in each innings of a Test match.

Having started the day at 190/4, India extended their lead to 267 with Virat Kohli scoring 88 to set South Africa an epic 481 to chase. However, any chances of even making an effort to chase down the target were put to bed after both South Africa's openers were dismissed early. AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla then settled down to play a dogged innings, dourly defending each ball. The run rated dipped below one per over as both Amla and de Villiers preferred to play out maidens than score any runs.

At the end of the day, Amla finished on 23, playing out 207 balls in the process. At the other end, de Villiers, the man who holds the record for the fastest-ever One Day International century, played out 91 balls for 11. South Africa will hope that the two have more in the tank if they want to entertain any chances of escaping with a draw.
